چکیده
We have employed variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy ~STM! to follow the kinetics of reoxidation of a nonstoichiometric TiO2 ~110! single-crystal surface. The surface is seen to grow during reoxidation between 573 and 1000 K and at pressures from 5310 to 2310 mbar O2 . The reaction proceeds by combination of gas-phase O2 with mobile interstitial Ti 31 from the bulk. The surface is observed to grow new layers of TiO2 in a cyclic process, resulting in the formation of alternate layers of (131) and cross-linked (132). The growth rate was calculated by measuring the area of new material grown on consecutive STM images of the same area. The rate shows a linear dependence upon oxygen pressure, with an Arrhenius plot indicating an activation barrier of ;2564 kJ mol ~0.2560.04 eV/O2 molecule! for the surface reaction.

Synthesis and structure of Al clusters supported on TiO2„110...: A scanning tunneling microscopy study
Al clusters supported on TiO2(110) have been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. Al interacts strongly with the TiO2(110) surface at room temperature and becomes oxidized by abstracting oxygen from the interface region of the substrate. Highly oxidized Al clusters were found to disorder the TiO2 substrate in the low coverage regime ~0.05 ML! illustrating that Al exhibits a strong ...
متن کاملVariations of the local electronic surface properties of TiO2„110... induced by intrinsic and extrinsic defects
Variation of the local electronic structure at rutile TiO2(110) surfaces was studied by scanning tunneling spectroscopy ~STS!. Structural surface features such as step edges, (132) reconstructed strands, and their terminations were correlated to changes in tunneling spectra. In particular, band-gap states, associated with a reduced surface, showed characteristic variations. In addition, electro...
متن کاملEvidence for the Tunneling Site on Transition-Metal Oxides: TiO2(110).
We present atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images from TiO2(110) surfaces. After annealing nearly perfect stoichiometric 1 3 1 surfaces to elevated temperatures in ultrahigh vacuum, randomly distributed oxygen vacancies are observed. The apparent shape of these defects provides strong evidence that the STM is imaging undercoordinated Ti atoms, as do firstprinciples pseud...
متن کاملThe nucleation sites of Ag clusters grown by vapor deposition on a TiO 2 ( 110 ) - 1 · 1 surface
We present results of a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study of the nucleation and growth of silver clusters grown by vapor deposition on a rutile TiO2(110)-1 · 1 surface. We have scanned, with atomic resolution, the same surface area before and after Ag deposition, to determine the relationship between the nucleation sites and various surface defects. We have found that small precursor st...
متن کاملBonding of gold nanoclusters to oxygen vacancies on rutile TiO2(110).
Through an interplay between scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that bridging oxygen vacancies are the active nucleation sites for Au clusters on the rutile TiO2(110) surface. We find that a direct correlation exists between a decrease in density of vacancies and the amount of Au deposited. From the DFT calculations we find that the oxy...
